Magna Carta
The Magna Carta (originally known as the Charter of Liberties) of 1215, written in iron gall ink on parchment in medieval Latin, using standard abbreviations of the period, authenticated with the Great Seal of King John. The original wax seal was lost over the centuries.
The Magna Carta was the result of the Barons of England standing up to King John and essentially saying “Enough is enough, stop ruining the country!”
The Magna Carta (which means “Great Charter”) is a very important document of laws. It was signed more than 800 years ago on June 15, 1215, by King John of England, the brother of Richard the Lionheart. The Magna Carta has inspired important sets of laws around the world. Many of the rights we all enjoy started with the Magna Carta, such as freedom of speech and fair trials. The Magna Carta included 63 clauses (parts), all of which King John had to agree to. The first version of the Magna Carta was called “The Articles of the Barons,” because King John was forced to sign it by 25 barons.

It set out the “rule of law.” Previously, there wasn’t a law to say that a king couldn’t have people arrested even if they hadn’t done anything wrong. The king had complete power and was not accountable to anyone else.
However, when King John placed his royal wax seal on the Magna Carta, he agreed that no free man would be jailed or punished without a legal process to prove his guilt or innocence. Also, no taxes would be imposed without consent from the Great Council. This was the first time that a king’s power had been checked by some kind of other political body. Although the Magna Carta mainly benefited rich barons, the principles it set out have led to it becoming a symbol of human rights for all people.

Today Magna Carta has become a world-class brand, representing human rights, democracy and free speech, It stands for human rights and democracy. It stands for trial by jury. It stands for free speech, the rule of law and personal liberty.

‘The right to liberty of the person is a fundamental right’
‘It has been so regarded since at least the time of the well-known provisions of clause 39 of Magna Carta, which in due course found its reflection in article 9 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and article 5 of the [European] Convention [on Human Rights].’

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights
was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 1948. Article 9, summarising clause 39 of the 1215 charter, states that: ‘No free man shall be arrested or imprisoned … or exiled or in any way ruined … except by lawful judgment of his peers or by the law of the land.’ This effectively established the principle of the rule of law, protecting individuals from arbitrary punishment.

That, in turn, led directly to the European Convention on Human Rights, which took effect in 1953. Article 5 begins: ‘Everyone has the right to liberty and security of person’. Through the Human Rights Act 1998, article 5 became enforceable against public bodies in the courts of the United Kingdom.

Northern Australian cattle producers are celebrating after the Federal Court Tuesday ruled a 2011 live export ban imposed by the Commonwealth was unlawful.

Justice Rares said Brett Cattle Company was "entitled to substantial damages" and said the "minister and the Commonwealth must pay its costs of the proceeding".

A successful result in the area of misfeasance in public office. "The Commonwealth has got 28 days to lodge an appeal.

Mr Katter said his move to protect the cattle industry and roll the Prime Minister ultimately led to his own near-demise at the next election when he almost lost his seat having been tarnished by the image of being associated with Labor.
“I call on all Members of Parliament to be inspired by this and to stand up for what you believe in. Don’t become a filthy irrelevancy held up as a puppet on a string for your political party.
“I plead with my fellow members of parliament; don’t sacrifice your beliefs for your seat in Parliament. It was important that I was sacrificing my political life for a good cause and you can do the same for the dairy crisis.”
Brett Cattle Co and the others involved in the Class Action will now be entitled to substantial damages and payment of the costs mounted during the nearly decade long battle against the Commonwealth. Mr Katter warned current and future state and federal leaders to pay attention to the power of the little guys and let the case serve as a crucial warning.

England: In March of 2001 a commitee of 25 Barons petitioned the Queen and invoked Magna Carta 1215, Article 61: Lawful Rebellion. It remains active to this day.
